10:00 Conditions Update: I learned a few things skiing today. One, it’s not slushy. The snow is comparable to yesterday just a little softer. It was delightful to sink some turns on that surface. Two, you probably need gloves. I was fooled by the promise of warm temperatures and blue skies and as soon as I was on Chair 2 I wished I had not been so full of hubris. Conditions are calm, but there’s some polite mist falling over the upper mountain that, paired with the overcast skies, makes the air feel a little crisper than 38. Which brings me to the third thing- it’s cloudy. I don’t know where those clouds came from because it was cloudless when I got in today. They’re hanging high, so you can see into the valley and some of the Enchantments from the summit, but it does affect the amount of light on the mountain. I’m a staunch proponent of clear goggles but some lightly tinted goggles will probably suit you best. There’s a very chill energy across the mountain. I think it’s a great way to wind down the weekend.
6:30 Conditions Report: One of my favorite parts of resort work is getting to see the sun rise from high on the mountain. There’s this phenomenon where sunlight changes color based on its angle of entry into the atmosphere and when the angle is nearly perpendicular, that light comes in blood red so sunrises and sets on the Great Plains are stunning. When you’re higher in elevation you can approximate that from your vantage point and see some bright red over the coulees. I was missing that for a few months and it’s started again which means the sun is rising earlier in the day. But with longer days comes warmth and you can feel all the complex feelings that come with that. It’s not quite T-shirt weather on The Ridge but its getting up there and temperatures stayed above freezing overnight across the mountain. I’m not going to say slush, but I’ll think it. We do have snowfall in the forecast… Only during the weekdays when we’re closed. It should start getting cold at night again during that period. For today, we have calm conditions forecast with bright sun and few clouds. A quick reminder that we will be closed this coming week Monday through Thursday and will reopen Friday through Sunday.
